Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango made history on Wednesday when his side won the league by becoming the most decorated player in South Africa.
This is the 36-year-old Ugandan keeper’s ninth PSL league title having first won it three times at SuperSport United and now six times at Sundowns. He has now overtaken the record of former Downs teammate Hlompho Kekana.
Onyango has now won an astonishing 16 trophies with Sundowns since 2014.
In an interview with journalists, and emotional Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena was full of praise for Onyango saying he was a man from humble beginnings who had grown to become a legend and one of the best keepers on the African continent.
“It’s very difficult to speak about Denis without being emotional because of what he has done not only for Sundowns but what he has done is incredible for these young kids that are in Uganda,” Mokwena told journalists.
“You’ve got to go to Uganda to understand the environment, not just from a political sense but the socio-economic background that he comes from.
“And to get someone to be the best goalkeeper on the African continent and to win that award from humble beginnings to achieve not only with Sundowns, but with Bidvest Wits and SuperSport, and that type of story is one that many footballers would be happy to write.” Mokwena added.
