University of Pretoria (Tuks) 1-0 Cape Town Spurs
University of Pretoria (Tuks) have knocked DStv Premiership side Cape Town Spurs out of the Nedbank Cup.
The two sides have met a lot in the last few years as they were also involved in a relegation/playoff battle at the end of last season with Spurs prevailing and thus sealing their place in the top-flight.
On this occasion, however, Tuks claimed a 1-0 victory with Delano Abrahams converting a penalty after Promise Mkhuma’s attempted shot drew a handball in the area.
Tuks created the better of the opportunities and Khomotso Marebane and Abrahams could have doubled the lead but both failed to do so. However, it would not come back to bite UP.
Highlands Park 1-1 Sekhukhune United (Sekhukhune United won 5-4 on penalties)
Sekhukhune United scraped through to the Nedbank Cup last 16 with a gritty penalty shootout victory over ABC Motsepe League side Highlands Park.
The sides could not be separated after 90 minutes and so the match went to extra time. Sekhukhune drew first blood four minutes after the interval when Trésor Tshibwabwa Yamba Yamba headed home Maloisane Mokhele’s free-kick.
In dramatic fashion, the lower-league minnows equalised in the second minute of extra-time stoppage time when Emilio Abreu finished with a close-range header from Marate Ndieguene’s delivery.
In the penalty shootout, Kamohelo Mokotjo netted a fifth consecutive penalty before Refentse Mphele missed to shatter Highlands hearts.
