Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu is reportedly close to returning from overseas and rejoining his former club Mamelodi Sundowns.
The 29-year-old Zungu left Sundowns to join Portuguese outfit Vitória Guimarães SC in July 2016.
Then in August 2018 Zungu signed for French side Amiens SC and was loaned out in 2020 to Scottish side Rangers FC, where he stayed until the loan-deal ended in June 2021.
He returned back to France to rejoin Amiens SC and has now reportedly been released by the club for ill-discipline and is a free agent.
There have been reports of Zungu living a bit of a undisciplined lifestyle in Europe and not spending enough time focusing his football duties, which has led to Bafana coach Hugo Broos not selecting the midfielder as part of his squad any longer.
There have been media reports doing the rounds that Zungu is looking to return to South Africa from Europe to carry on with his football career with Sundowns reportedly being interested in signing him.
In an interview with Soccer Laduma, former Sundowns striker Sandile Ndlovu believes Zungu would be making a huge mistake by moving back to South Africa.
“I think there’s this tendency of South African players not wanting to fight for their place in Europe. We usually put it as ‘home sick’ which is very strange and only happens with our players,” Ndlovu tells Soccer Laduma.
“Bongani Zungu is quality to be playing PSL football. I don’t know what is happening with him, but I don’t think coming back to the country is a wise decision, because he still has lots to offer.
“He was at Rangers and if he was pushing so hard, moving to EPL was close with his quality, I wouldn’t advise him to play here. He is too good for PSL and I’m really shocked that he is even considering a move this side.”
