Mweene is set to start in goal for Masandawana after the club gave first-choice shot-stopper Denis Onyango some time off to mourn the death of his father.

Sundowns now face a top of the table clash against Amakhosi at the Loftus Stadium and Mweene says he is up to the challenge.

“It’s unfortunate that Denis lost his father, and as Sundowns we sympathise with him but at the end of the day, the team has to continue playing the games,” said Mweene, in quotes published on Kickoff.

“I’m ready [to step up]. It’s about the work we put here in training, because most of what we do here is not what we always get in a game – maybe you dive two or three times, but we’re always preparing [for more] here.”

Mweene will also be against familiar faces when they play Chiefs as Khama Billiat and Leonard Castro starred for Sundowns in the past.

The Zambia goalkeeper continued: “It does help [knowing Castro and Billiat] but they are different players because now they are playing for Chiefs, and you cannot sit and say, ‘I know them.’

“You have to watch the games they’ve played before and you have to know how Khama is doing at this time.

“So, I think we have to do our job as well. Even if the coach does most of the work for us [through analysis and training preparation], as players you also have to watch the opponents as well.”
