MTN8 Semi-final 1st-leg Preview

Mamelodi Sundowns

Just four teams remain as the semi-finals of the MTN8 get underway. Golden Arrows will be hoping to dump another Tshwane giant out of the competition when they face Mamelodi Sundowns this weekend after knocking SuperSport United out of the MTN8 in the quarter-final. Eric Tinkler seeks yet another piece of silverware when his Cape Town City side meet Swallows, who come off the back of beating Orlando Pirates in the ‘original Soweto Derby’. The R8 million prize is within touching distance, so all four teams will be hoping to swing the first leg ties in their favour.

Golden Arrows 3/1
Draw 22/10
Sundowns 9/10
(15:00)

Golden Arrows have a mammoth task on their hands to complete the Tshwane double as they look to overcome significant odds to knock out Mamelodi Sundowns. Lehlohonolo Seema’s side beat SuperSport United 4-3 on penalties and followed that up with a commendable 2-1 victory over Maritzburg United in the KZN derby. Sundowns have also had a perfect start to the campaign, beating Kaizer Chiefs on penalties in the quarter-finals, while the Brazilians then went on to oust AmaZulu 1-0 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Downs have beaten arguably two of their closest rivals for the season already, so I fancy them to claim bragging rights in the first leg.

Sunday 29 August

Cape Town City 13/10
Draw 2/1
Swallows 22/10
(15:00)

Athlone Stadium will host an entertaining tie between Cape Town City and Swallows in the first leg of their semi-final tie this Sunday. Both sides know how to make this an exciting tie to look forward to so fireworks can definitely be expected. Cape Town City did superbly well to beat AmaZulu 2-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, while Swallows claimed a victory just as impressive, knocking Orlando Pirates out of the MTN8 at their own backyard. The Dube Birds scored a last-gasp winner in their DStv Premiership opener to get the better of Royal AM, while City drew to SuperSport United. My money is on a stalemate in the first leg here.

DOUBLE @ 9/2
Sundowns Win 9/10
Cape Town City vs Swallows Draw 2/1
