Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane believes his team has proven that local football is on par with the best leagues on the continent.

Sundowns have been in sensational form in the CAF Champions League with consecutive wins over Zamalek (2-1), Enyimba (2-1) and ES Setif (2-0).

The Brazilians are unbeaten in the competition and on the verge of securing a spot in the semi-finals.

“Us‚ as South Africans‚ we are not too far. The gap is closing‚” Mosimane told The Sowetan.

“Look at Bafana Bafana when they play away [to teams like] Senegal‚ Cameroon they do very well. It is just towards the end where we make some small mistakes and lose concentration‚ then we either draw or lose. But we are not too far.

“We need to take the Champions League seriously. It provides the national team with opportunities. Now [Bafana coach] Shakes [Mashaba] knows… The talent is there.

“We have also unveiled Keagan [Dolly]. We have more‚ we are safe at the highest level. It’s open‚ the [players] are tried and tested.”
