Rhulani Mokwena is leaving Chippa United triumphant having been the only coach to exit the club “without getting fired”.
The Orlando Pirates coach joined the Chilli boys on a short-term loan deal in February until the end of the season.
While the current campaign remains suspended, as a result of the coronavirus, Mokwena is heading back to Bucs.
Chippa boss Siviwe Mpengesi decided against tying the coach to a new deal, to see out the 2019/20 Premier Soccer League season, meaning Mokwena oversaw only one result – a 0-0 draw with Bidvest Wits.
Mpengesi is well known for his history of hiring and firing coaches, but Mokwena feels he succeeded at the club, by seeing his contract.
Mokwena officially parted ways with Chippa at the start of July, and subsequently spoke to IOL.
He said: “We only played one match, but there’s a lot of positives that one can take. That 0-0 draw was something that we were prepared to take as positive.
“By default, it means I leave the club undefeated! I leave Chippa United as the first coach to finish his contract. I finished my stay without getting fired.
“Those are the positives. Beyond that is what we’ve done for the club and they will benefit in the future. We have an agreement with the high performance centre at Nelson Mandela Bay. We’ve set up a few good processes.”
