Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena says winning the DStv Premiership title has by no means become a mere formality after they claimed a record fifth consecutive league crown on Wednesday.
The 0-0 draw at Loftus Stadium against Cape Town City FC on Wednesday night was all that was needed for Sundowns to win the league with four league matches still to play.
Many have described the league as a “farmers League” due to the ease with which Sundowns have claimed the title. The Brazilians currently sit 13 points ahead of second-placed Royal AM after 26 games played.
In an interview after the match on Wednesday, coach Mokwena said the league was by no means a “farmers league”.
“To not have that type of situation (a farmers league) you need strong rivals,” Mokwena said post-match.
“Maybe the reality is that if you look at the stories such as Bayern for example and how they win their titles. The same with PSG, then they go into that sort of Champions League level and then maybe the stimulation is not there.
“Of course, I think every time Bayern have done well [in the Champions League] is when they have had very strong rivals in the domestic league.
“That responsibility to make sure that there are stronger rivals in the league, unfortunately, is not our responsibility.
“We have the potential to have strong rivals with regards to some of the teams and it’s a difficult responsibility and I’m glad it’s not my responsibility,” Mokwena added.
