Mngqithi Set to Take the Helm at Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns appear to be on the verge of a significant leadership change, with Manqoba Mngqithi poised to become their new head coach. This news comes after a period of uncertainty surrounding the club’s technical team following the departure of Rulani Mokwena.

A Surprising Exit and Restructuring

Just weeks ago, Sundowns made the unexpected decision to part ways with Mokwena, who had led them to an impressive run of success, including seven consecutive DStv Premiership titles and the inaugural African Football League trophy in 2023.

This move, despite being described as a “mutual consent” parting, raised eyebrows due to the remaining time on Mokwena’s contract. He quickly found a new home with Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca.

Mngqithi Steps Up

With Mokwena’s departure, Sundowns turned their attention to Mngqithi, a highly experienced coach who has been with the club since 2013. Initially, there were talks of a “unique role” for Mngqithi, something beyond the traditional assistant or head coach position. However, the latest update from his agent, Mike Makaab, suggests a shift in plans.

Deal Agreed In Principle

According to Mngqithi’s agent Mike Makaab, an agreement has been reached in principle for Mngqithi to take over as head coach. The paperwork is expected to be finalized next week, solidifying Mngqithi’s position at the helm. This marks a significant turn of events compared to the previous rumors.

A Wealth of Experience

Mngqithi brings a wealth of experience to the role. Joining Sundowns from Golden Arrows in 2013, he has been a key figure in their success, contributing to numerous trophies, including the prestigious 2016 CAF Champions League title.

A Revamped Technical Team

Mngqithi won’t be going it alone. He’ll be joined by Steve Komphela, who recently re-joined Sundowns as senior coach, adding further experience to the technical team. Additionally, Romain Folz has been appointed as assistant coach. Folz, a young and ambitious coach with experience in South Africa with Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu FC, brings a fresh perspective and an attacking philosophy that Mngqithi has previously admired.

With Mngqithi at the helm, Sundowns appear determined to maintain their dominance in South African football. The combination of his experience, Komphela’s guidance, and Folz’s attacking approach promises an exciting new chapter for the Brazilians.
