Minister Mbalula: Rhulani is not equal to the task

Orlando Pirates coach Rhulani Mokwena

Transport minister Fikile Mbalula and self-confessed Orlando Pirates fan has expressed serious doubts about whether Rhulani Mokwena is the right man for the Buccanneers top job.

Mokwena has won just twice in nine matches since taking the reins at Pirates and oversaw a disappointing 1-0 defeat to newbies Stellenbosch FC at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, which has seen the pressure on the 32-year-old increase even further.

It does not get any easier for the Sea Robbers’ tactician as Pirates next face Kaizer Chiefs in a Soweto Derby in the Telkom Knockout quarter-finals at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

And Mbalula, who was formerly the ANC Youth League chairperson, believes there are ‘many great players’ but no coach in the Buccanneers’ website.

“Pirates doesn’t have a coach,” Mbalula wrote on his official Twitter account.

“I looked forward to a great season for my team but am afraid [it] is not about to happen, we are in denial. So many great players but no coach.

“I have heard about this experiment. Pirates is a big club to experiment with history, it is our team we supported since we were kids. I support Rhulani Mokoena but for now he is not equal to the task.”
