Kaizer Chiefs head coach Ernst Middendorp has given Itumeleng Khune’s fans hope by stating that he will consider picking him for the Soweto derby.
An outspoken section of the Chiefs fanbase has urged the German tactician to restore Khune as the first choice between the sticks, where Daniel Akpeyi has staked his claim while Khune was recovering from injury.
Middendorp has responded to the calls to select Khune by acknowledging that he understands the fans’ passion and that there is a possibility that he could play against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
“I have always, and I think it is very crucial, absolutely respected opinions [from the supporters], there’s no doubt about it,” said Middendorp, as quoted by KickOff.
“Absolutely, we put it always in the process of decision-making, but it’s something where we have competence in our technical team really, to see what’s the best solution.
“I understand fully a certain emotional attachment into the certain type of players [that fans like], but what must I say? I understand and I really respect it, and probably [Khune] will be on the field, why not? He’s an option.”
Asked whether he has decided who will play, he added: “No, no, no. Today is Thursday. It is a very tough decision, and each and everybody should respect the decision [that gets made] in the end, and that’s it.”
