Marcelo Allende speaks on Player of the Season award snub

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Marcelo Allende says the only disappointment he feels is not winning trophies.

The 25-year-old former Santa Cruz and Necaxa player joined the Brazilians from Uruguayan Segunda Division side Montevideo City Torque in 2022.

He has gone on to play 77 games, scoring eight goals and providing eight, winning both the 2023/24 DStv Premiership as well as the inaugural African Football League.

He was touted for an individual accolade when the Premier Soccer League awards were being allocated but ending up missing out, while former Downs coach Rulani Mokwena won Coach of the Season as Grant Kekana scooped Defender of the Season.

Allende explained that he is more focused on helping his team than stealing the spotlight.

“For me, the disappointment would be me for not winning trophies because this is for me very important.

“It’s more about the group than individually for me. If we win the MNT8, Nedbank Cup and become champions, that’s more important for me and individual awards are secondary,” Allende said in the Citizen.

Sundowns are in action against Polokwane City in their MTN8 quarter-final clash on Sunday.

“Our preparations have been very good and we had a good training camp with good intensity,’ added the 25-year-old.

“We need to win this game because we’re Sundowns so we need to start the season with a win and we’re ready,” he added.
