Manqoba Mngqithi not focused on his side’s position in the Betway Premiership

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi insists he is not concerned by his side’s current position in the Betway Premiership.

The Brazilians were second best to Orlando Pirates for the first few months of the season but have since reclaimed top spot.

The top two sides are both on 21 points with seven wins and one loss from their opening eight games.

Sundowns though take top spot having a better goal-difference.

They most recently beat Sekhukhune United 3-0 as Pirates went down 1-0 to third-placed Stellenbosch.

Reflecting on his side’s campaign so far, Mngqithi said in the Citizen: “Our focus at this stage is not on whether we are on top of the log or not. It’s more about looking at our cycles and whether we are achieving our targets or not.

“We’ve achieved our target in the first cycle (of five matches) and we’re close to achieving our targets in the second cycle. That looks positive for us because our main way of looking at this thing is to try and make sure that we respect the process and don’t get carried away.

“Sometimes there’s no need to put pressure on the team, there’s no need to panic and I think the boys are responding the way we’d love them to.”
