Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has addressed the absence of assistant coach Romain Folz, who missed the club’s last two fixtures.
Folz, who joined the Tshwane-based giants during the off-season, was notably absent during Sundowns’ goalless draw against AS Maniema Union in the CAF Champions League group stage opener last Tuesday.
He also missed the 3-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Goals from Arthur Sales, Iqraam Rayners, and an own goal by Tresor Yamba Yamba propelled Sundowns to the top of the league standings with 21 points. They are level on points with Orlando Pirates, who lost to Stellenbosch FC the following day.
In Folz’s absence, goalkeeper coach Wendell Robinson stepped into the assistant coach role on the team sheet. Mngqithi explained that Robinson is no stranger to this responsibility, having performed similar duties during Pitso Mosimane’s tenure.
“He (Wendell Robinson) has always been an assistant coach, but he’s also a goalkeeper coach,” Mngqithi said. “This time around, we didn’t have Romain on the bench because he’s doing his coaching course.
“Naturally, we had a spot open to list another coach, and Wendell filled that gap.”
Mngqithi also highlighted Robinson’s credentials, affirming his expertise. “He’s a qualified coach, just like the rest of us. It’s not about pushing him into a new role; he’s been part of the coaching structure for years.”
The absence of Folz stems from his pursuit of further professional development, showcasing Sundowns’ commitment to fostering a technically skilled coaching team. Despite the temporary reshuffle, Sundowns’ dominance on the pitch remains unshaken.
