Manchester United release their retained list amidst transfer window

Heading into the summer, Manchester United release seven players in brutal summer overhaul with two surprise players in talks for new deals. The FA cup winners have become the latest Premier League team to announce their retained list.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “As announced last month, Anthony Martial is leaving the club after making 317 appearances. Fellow Frenchman Raphael Varane is also departing following three seasons at Old Trafford.

“Academy graduate, Brandon Williams will leave United following the expiry of his contract. The full-back, who joined the club at the age of nine and proudly went on to make 51 first-team appearances, will always be welcome back at the club through the Alumni programme.”

The club confirmed that veterans Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton remain in discussion over a potential new deal at the club. Whilst Omari Forson has formally been offered a new contract. The likes of Anthony Martial, Raphael Varane and Brandon Williams will depart Old Trafford.


The retained players aged over 24 as of 30 June 2024 include: Altay Bayindir, Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Antony, Christian Eriksen, Jonny Evans (Eligible for free transfer), Tom Heaton (Eligible for free transfer), Tom Huddlestone (Eligible for free transfer), Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Tyrell Malacia, Anthony Martial (Eligible for free transfer), Lisandro Martinez, Scott McTominay, Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Luke Shaw, Donny van de Beek, Raphael Varane (Eligible for free transfer) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. 

The retained players aged under 24 as of 30 June 2024 include: Victor Musa, Sonny Aljofree, Harry Amass, Rhys Bennett, Gabriele Bianchieri, Toby Collyer, Amad, Ethan Ennis, Alvaro Fernandez (Benfica have exercised the option to purchase the player on a permanent basis after a loan deal), Will Fish, Jayce Fitzgerald, Jack Fletcher, Tyler Fletcher, Omari Forson (Under Offer), Tyler Fredericson, Alejandro Garnacho, Dan Gore, Mason Greenwood, Elyh Harrison, Rasmus Hojlund, Joe Hugill, Louis Jackson, Jaydan Kamason, Willy Kambwala, Shea Lacey, Kobbie Mainoo, Sam Mather, Finley McAllister, Charlie McNeill (Free transfer), Dermot Mee, Hannibal, Jack Moorhouse, Sam Murray, James Nolan, Habeeb Ogunneye, Max Oyedele, Facundo Pellistri, Kie Plumley (Free transfer), Malachi Sharpe, Shola Shoretire (Free transfer), Radek Vitek, Ethan Wheatley, Brandon Williams (Free transfer) and Tom Wooster. 

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is rumored to overhaul the squad and make new signings, and as such, the club will likely have more departures before the start of pre-season.

Furthermore, after a largely disappointing season, the Red Devils are heading into the summer with the future of manager Erik ten Hag up in the air.
