Mamelodi Sundowns look prepared to unveil a new attacking weapon this season, with coach Manqoba Mngqithi opting to deploy Thapelo Maseko as a striker.
This tactical shift comes as the Brazilians look to reinforce their forward line ahead of their MTN8 Cup opener against Polokwane City on Sunday at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
The 2024-25 season promises to be demanding for Sundowns, with a packed schedule and the need to maintain consistency in attack. The club has already strengthened its striking options by signing Brazilian forward Arthur Sales, who joined the ranks alongside established strikers Peter Shalulile and Lucas Ribeiro.
However, with injuries always a concern, Mngqithi has recognised the importance of having versatile options upfront.
Mngqithi’s decision to utilise Maseko as a striker during pre-season is not without reason. The 53-year-old coach was impressed with how the former SuperSport United player adapted to the role during their training camp in Austria.
“I played Maseko a lot as a striker in Austria, and he has developed in leaps and bounds,” Mngqithi revealed on the club’s The Pitchside Podcast. “I’m happy with what I see because I had question marks about him as a winger.
“But as a striker, he’s got something to give.”
Maseko, often compares to former Sundowns stars Percy Tau and Khama Billiat, possesses a unique blend of pace and finishing ability that made him a potent threat in front of goal. “Many people believe he’s strong in dribbling; I don’t think so,” Mngqithi added.
“I think he’s very strong in the space behind because of the pace that he has, he’s got a good finish, and those two things make him dangerous as a nine. Also, he may be a small boy, but he’s very strong.”
Despite facing criticism for his inconsistency in delivering the final product, Maseko has already shown glimpses of his potential. Last season, he won the African Football League Most Valuable Player award, a testament to his growing influence on the pitch. Sundowns, having invested heavily in his signing, will be hoping for a significant return this season.
Mngqithi’s bold move to position Maseko as a striker highlights his tactical acumen and the faith he has in the 21-year-old’s abilities. As the new season looms, all eyes will be on Maseko, who could have the potential to become Sundowns’ next great attacking sensation.
