Mamelodi Sundowns will be looking to bounce back when they host Cape Town City FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night in the Betway Premiership.
Last season, Sundowns dominated the league, losing just once in 30 games, and that sole defeat came at the hands of Cape Town City in their final match.
Sundowns, who finished an astonishing 23 points ahead of nearest challengers Orlando Pirates, opened the new campaign strongly.
However, a recent 1-0 defeat to Polokwane City saw them slip to second in the table, trailing Orlando Pirates by three points.
Head coach Manqoba Mngqithi did not hold back in his criticism, stating, “I was not impressed with the speed of play, our chance creation, or the decision-making in the final third.”
This midweek clash offers Sundowns an opportunity to avenge their only loss last season, but they will need to be mindful of managing players’ energy as they also prepare for a Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinal against rivals Kaizer Chiefs over the weekend.
Cape Town City, under Eric Tinkler, have had a mixed start to the season, currently sitting 12th with just one win in four league outings.
City will be eager to regain form, especially after a recent home draw against Marumo Gallants.
The Cape side remain one of the few teams capable of frustrating Sundowns, as evidenced by last season’s narrow 1-0 victory at Loftus and a goalless draw at home.
Mamelodi Sundowns have won 13 times in their past 30 meetings with Cape Town City who have won nine times and eight draws.
This matchup promises to test Sundowns’ resilience as they aim to reclaim top spot and maintain their dominance over the league.
