Mamelodi Sundowns provide update on injured star Themba Zwane

Mamelodi Sundowns have issued an update on the condition of their attacking midfielder, Themba Zwane, following a distressing injury suffered during their MTN8 semi-final first leg showdown against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

Zwane endured a harrowing injury as he collided with Chiefs’ Yusuf Maart in the first half of an intense 1-1 draw against AmaKhosi, appearing to sustain a severe injury.

The club have officially confirmed that, as of Monday morning, Zwane has been discharged from the hospital and is now on the road to recovery.

“In Saturday’s MTN8 semi-final first leg, Themba ‘Mshishi’ Zwane sustained a deep cut to his upper right eye. Immediate on-field medical attention was provided, and he received stabilization at the stadium,” stated the club in a press release.

“Zwane was subsequently admitted to the hospital for additional monitoring and a precautionary concussion scan. The positive news is that he is currently resting comfortably at home, under the watchful care of the club’s medical team.”

Post-match, Mamelodi Sundowns manager Rulani Mokwena expressed his apprehension regarding Zwane’s condition but also expressed gratitude for the upcoming FIFA break.

“With that significant laceration that landed him in the hospital, the foul clearly went against us, and that’s probably my primary concern. However, we now have a FIFA break,” Mokwena commented.

“We also have Bafana Bafana with important matches ahead, and they require Mshishi, but fortunately, these are friendly matches. Although they are crucial, the health and well-being of a player like Mshishi take precedence in the current circumstances over performance against Congo and Namibia.

“So, hopefully, he can get some much-needed rest because, with a concussion, it’s a 10 to 14-day recovery period, and this precautionary measure is essential, especially given our limited offensive options.”

Bafana are scheduled to host Namibia on Saturday, 9 September, while Sundowns will return to the field on Friday, 15 September, in a clash against Bumamuru in the CAF Champions League’s second preliminary round.
