Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi content with being behind Orlando Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi admits he welcomes a chase to the Betway Premiership title this season.

The Brazilians have won the last seven South African top-flight crowns, largely at a canter with the chasing teams following far behind.

Last term, Sundowns secured the Premier Soccer League some 23 points ahead of second-placed Orlando Pirates.

This term though, the Buccaneers are three points ahead after six games and remain the only unbeaten Premiership side.

Sundowns bounced back from a 1-0 reverse to Polokwane City last weekend to beat Cape Town City 3-0 on Wednesday.

Mngqithi said on iDiski Times: “Personally I prefer to chase, personally because you always have a target, and we have been that target for far too long.

“But when you are there, you must never slip up. So I think it will be better to chase, it will be better to chase [the title].”

On the improvement of teams in the league, the Downs boss added: “To be honest, in the first, five six matches of the season, it’s always very close to what’s happening, I’ve seen Arrows number one, I’ve seen different things in the PSL in the first 10 matches.

“It will be nice to see how this season is going to pan out, but one thing I can guarantee you is it’s impressive to see so many teams putting in a very good fight, it’s impressive to see at Polokwane City, Stellenbosch, Magesi.

“I applaud the work the coaches are doing to make life difficult for everybody else in the league, I really like that, it will help us all, ourselves and Orlando Pirates in the Champions League.”
