Malawi vs Senegal Preview

Orlando Pirates forward Gabadinho Mhango scored two goals either side of the half time whistle to cancel out Zimbabwean midfielder Ishmael Wadi’s opener to complete a come-from-behind win that inspired Malawi to victory. This gives The Flames a glimmer of hope going into their final group-stage match against tournament favourites Senegal.

Baroka FC striker Richard Mbulu will provide support to his DStv Premiership compatriot in attack, with AmaZulu defender Limbikani Mzava constantly trying to play the dynamic duo over the top with diagonal crosses from deep within his centre-back position.

The Flames try to attack predominantly down their left-flank with jersey number 10 Francisco Madinga providing the first assist to Mhango, while consistently hugging the touchline and making the pitch bigger for his teammates to capitalize within the spaces created.

Senegal have been underwhelming to say the least after carrying the tag of favourites to lift the cup. Coach Aliou Cisse’s troops could count themselves fortunate to earn a controversial penalty in injury time, sinking Zimbabwe 1-0 in their opener.

The last match against Guinea ended goalless as a few key players were questionably brought on as late and ineffective substitutes instead of being included in the starting XI. Personally, I would start Keita Balde who played 60 minutes against Zimbabwe before sitting out the Guinea tie.

The world’s best goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and captain Kalidou Koulibaly are yet to feature in the competition following positive Covid-19 tests and are likely to return to the fold during the knockout stages.

The Lions of Teranga will surely qualify to the final-16 if they avoid defeat in this clash and are yet to concede a goal which proves they are serious contenders to go all the way, however, time is running out for the team to gel and improve within the space of three or four games.
