LYLE LAKAY: REDEMPTION ON THE CARDS FOR SUPERSPORT UNITED

SuperSport United will look to get back to winning ways when they host Polokwane City on Wednesday at the Lucas Moripe Stadium after a series of underwhelming performances which has seen them drop crucial points and get knocked out of the Nedbank Cup.

Following a string of unfavourable results including a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Stellenbosch FC in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup, United aims to turn the tide and start picking up points at the expense of the Limpopo side, Polokwane City.

The lacklustre performances have seen Amantsantsantsa going six matches without a win in the DStv Premiership which has caused them to drop to sixth place on the log standings with 34 points. They started the season well sitting in the top four for the greater part of it.

United’s defender Lyle Lakay has acknowledged his side’s recent disappointing performances and explained that they are still capable of turning things around and getting back on the winning lane, adding that it takes one game to turn the situation around.

“Everybody knows that we haven’t won in maybe five or six games now but it’s important for us to get ourselves out of it, you know it takes one game, and having said that, it’s crucial at this time of the season to pick up points and for sure I believe and the players also believe that we can get ourselves out of it starting with this one.”

The former Cape Town City and Mamelodi Sundowns player further explained that throughout his career, he and his teammates have experienced a similar situation in their careers and there is nothing that they can do except dust themselves up, dig deeper and fight to turn things around.

“It’s a reality, it’s the truth that we haven’t won (in a while) and I think we just have to give more, keep on doing the right things and show a bit more character, like I said; it takes one game to turn everything around.”

He also urged the fans not to turn their backs on the team as this predicament will not last forever, promising that they are working tirelessly to overturn the situation.

“Don’t give up, continue to support the team. We know how you guys feel but just continue supporting the team and we will turn it around.”

Lakay has been an integral part of SuperSport United since joining at the start of the 2023/2024 season from cross-town rivals Sundowns. He scored an equalizer in the dying minutes of the game when they shared spoils with Cape Town City.

Gavin Hunt’s men have won two of their recent three fixtures against Rise and Shine, with the other clash ending in a stalemate. We look to see if they can get back on the winning path and finish the season on a high note.
