Luke Baartman says he will use this season in the National First Division to secure a “bigger team” in the future.
The 18-year-old Cape Town Spurs forward has been a revelation for the club since his promotion to the first team and went on to feature 10 times in the DStv Premiership last season, netting two goals.
He has been a reported target for a number of local and overseas-based teams, including Celtic and Leeds United, but will remain committed to Spurs following their relegation from the South Africa top-flight.
Spurs have seen the likes of Rushwin Dortley leave the club to sign for Kaizer Chiefs and Baartman explained he will grab a similar opportunity when it comes around for him.
Baartman, who is currently with the South African under-20 side in Lesotho, said on FARPost: “I think for the next two years, I want to play this season [in the NFD] out and score many goals. Hopefully, there could be bigger opportunities from bigger teams.
“So, I’ll stay humble this year and wait for the right opportunity to come. I think when the opportunity comes, I’ll grab it with both hands because opportunities don’t come a lot.
“I must just work hard and wait for the right opportunity, like I said.”
Spurs kick off their Motsepe Foundation Championship season away to the University of Pretoria on Sunday 25 August.
