Mamelodi Sundowns claimed a solid 2-0 victory over Polokwane City on Wednesday at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, bolstering their position in the standings.
With this win, Sundowns now sit in second place with 18 points, just three points behind league leaders, the Orlando Pirates, while Polokwane City drops to fourth with 13 points.
The match saw Kutlwano Letlhaku emerge as the hero for Sundowns. He scored both goals—his first league brace—in the 27th and 69th minutes. Arthur Sales was instrumental in both goals, providing well-timed assists.
Sundowns’ coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, made a series of changes to his squad, with only Peter Shalulile and Ronwen Williams retained from the previous lineup.
Polokwane City, on the other hand, introduced Thabang Matuludi and Manuel Kambala into their starting eleven.
Sundowns showed early intent, with Shalulile forcing a save in the opening five minutes, but it wasn’t until the 27th minute that Letlhaku opened the scoring.
City had few chances, with Matuludi lacking support in the box and Kambala’s long-range effort going over.
Hlayisi Chauke missed a potential equaliser in the 56th minute, heading wide.
Letlhaku’s second goal sealed the win for Sundowns, who nearly extended their lead further when Divine Lunga’s shot was deflected for a corner.
Polokwane City’s struggles were compounded by missed opportunities, while Sundowns’ victory keeps the pressure on the Pirates at the top of the table.
