Kaizer Chiefs Eye Talented Winger Asanele Velebayi from Relegated Cape Town Spurs

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly hot on the heels of young winger Asanele Velebayi, according to sources at SABC Sport. This news comes despite Cape Town Spurs‘ relegation from the Premier Soccer League at the end of last season.

Velebayi’s Breakout Season

Despite the club’s struggles, the 21-year-old Velebayi has been a standout performer. He racked up 24 appearances across all competitions in the 2023/24 season, marking a significant breakthrough year for him.  His impressive form even caught the eye of national team coach Helman Mkhalele, who awarded Velebayi a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the recent COSAFA Cup.

Chiefs Additions

Kaizer Chiefs, under the leadership of new coach Nasreddine Nabi, are actively looking to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season. The potential signing of Velebayi follows the recent acquisitions of goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy and left-back Bongani Sam from Orlando Pirates.

Both Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town Spurs are keeping the details of the potential transfer under wraps, similar to their recent negotiations for defender Rushwin Dortley.  Dortley, another Spurs player, reportedly agreed on a transfer fee with Chiefs, however, his personal terms with the club are still being finalized.

Will Velebayi Embrace the Amakhosi Challenge?

Kaizer Chiefs are particularly interested in Velebayi’s potential. They see him as a talented prospect who can further develop his skills under the guidance of coach Nabi.  An official offer from Chiefs is expected to be tabled once Spurs agree to the transfer, allowing them to potentially generate some income before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

If a deal is reached, it will be interesting to see how Velebayi adapts to the pressure of playing for a major club like Kaizer Chiefs.  However, based on his recent call-up to the national team, he seems to possess the temperament and talent to thrive in a more competitive environment.

This potential transfer could be a win-win situation for both clubs, with Chiefs acquiring a promising young player and Spurs securing valuable financial resources to help them rebuild in the National First Division.
