Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro bemoaned his side’s wasted opportunities in the goalless draw with Madagascan outfit Disciples FC on Sunday.
Riveiro wants his side to be more ruthless when they meet in the second leg at Orlando Stadium on Friday (7.30pm) after squandering several gilt-edged chances against Disciples in a match they were expected to win comfortably.
Riveiro lamented the fact his side were unable to get an away goal, but he is confident they will win do enough to progress on their own turf.
“I think the opposition today [Sunday] was excellent and every result would have been possible like winning,” Riveiro told the club media department after the game.
“I think both sides had very clear chances and, strangely, we finished the game goalless. We could not manage to capitalise ours to get a goal advantage at least to go into the second leg with an advantage.
“But we didn’t concede it is also important and in less than one week, we have to finalise this in Orlando and we know that it is not going to be easy like I said because they are a good team and we have to do everything to impose ourselves.”
The winner of this round will advance to face either Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy or Namibia’s African Stars in the second preliminary round.
African Stars hold a 1-0 lead after winning the first leg at home and are set to play the return match on Saturday at Botswana National Stadium.
Last season, the Buccaneers were knocked out in the second round after a penalty shootout loss to Jwaneng, and this time, they are determined to go on a deeper run in the competition.
