Orlando Pirates head coach José Riveiro has downplayed concerns about his contract extension, staying focused on his goal of winning the Betway Premiership this season.
Riveiro, who joined Pirates in 2022 on a three-year deal, has quickly become a fan favorite, bringing significant success to the Soweto giants.
Since his arrival, the Spanish tactician has led the Sea Robbers to an impressive five trophies in just two seasons. His achievements have rejuvenated the club’s spirit, with fans enthusiastically returning to fill the stands at Orlando Stadium during matches.
“Right now, we are in a very important period of the season we are in the middle of the fifth month of the season.
“We are not even halfway (of the season) it’s true that my contract is coming to an end at the end of the current season,” Riveiro said.
Under his leadership, the Soweto giants have been a force to reckon with in South African football, securing both domestic and cup victories.
However, despite his remarkable success, Riveiro is approaching the final year of his current contract, which is set to expire at the end of this season.
During a recent interview with Hollywoodbets Brand Ambassador Robert Marawa, on 947 the 47-year-old mentor emphasized that it’s too early to be concerned about extending his stay with the club.
“Probably there’s going to be a moment where we can sit down (with the club) and have that conversation (contract negotiations) and we will see what happens after that,” Riveiro added.
“But right now I think it’s a moment to stay together team and fans to enjoy the moment because we work so hard to find ourselves in the situation where we are right now which means nothing it’s just seven games in the league.”
Rivero has also led Pirates back to the Caf Champions League as they last played in the competition during the 2018/19 season where they were knocked out in the group stages phase.
And fans are eager to see him commit to a new deal, Riveiro’s focus remains firmly on the pitch.
The Buccaneers supporters, who have seen the club return to glory under his guidance, are hopeful that he will continue to lead the team beyond his current contract.
“We are heading close to starting the group stages in the Champions League which is a really motivational competition for where we can test ourselves in a very high level,” Riveiro said.
“And we have to really grab this moment with all of our strength.
“We are in a football business you will never know what’s going to happen in the future but like I said it’s going to be a moment to talk about and be honest about it with ourselves and see what’s coming.”
Amabhakhaniya will start their Caf Champions League group stages match away from home on Tuesday, 26 November as they will travel to Algeria to face Khanyisa Mayo’s CR Belouizdad.
Riveiro’s side will also play Al Ahly of Egypt and Stade d’Abidjan of Ivory Coast in Group C.
