JOSE RIVEIRO LAUDS ORLANDO PIRATES’ SUCCESSFUL PRE-SEASON TOUR IN SPAIN

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro lauded their pre-season tour in Spain, calling it a huge success that brilliantly showcased the Buccaneers’ brand.

Reflecting on the tour, Riveiro said, “Overall, yes, I am happy with the tour. It was a tough pre-season tour with a lot of competition.

“We approached every game as if it were a three-point match, understanding the importance of representing our football and our brand. In that regard, the players did fantastic, in my opinion.”

Riveiro commended his players’ commitment and discipline throughout the tour. “They showed the football we want to play in every game and adhered to our team objectives. There was discipline in the group every day, whether training, resting, or preparing for the next match.

“These players were focused every day, so I think we are returning to Johannesburg in a better space,” he added.

Pirates returned home after nearly two weeks in Spain, where they played four friendlies. Their first match saw them draw 2-2 against English Championship side Plymouth Argyle, managed by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney.

Their second outing was a notable triumph, as they stunned La Liga side Sevilla with a 2-0 victory. This was followed by a 1-1 draw against Granada, who had been relegated from La Liga last season. In their final game, the Pirates faced Qatari champions Al Sadd, narrowly losing 3-2.

Riveiro emphasized that the tour was also crucial in preparing the team for a demanding schedule ahead. “Getting players ready in a short space of time is one of the objectives of the pre-season.

“We pushed the training weeks to a level where competition feels like a day off. This is crucial with the tough schedule we face in August, especially with the Champions League in the picture as well. Probably now we are more prepared than before,” he stated.

The Buccaneers will be competing in five tournaments this season: DStv Premiership, MTN8 Cup, CAF Champions League, Carling Knockout Cup, and Nedbank Cup. The experience gained from playing four games in quick succession in Spain will undoubtedly serve them well in managing their congested fixture list.

With Riveiro at the helm, Pirates look well-prepared and optimistic for the challenges ahead. Their successful pre-season tour has not only boosted their confidence but has also given them valuable experience against a variety of playing styles and high-level competition.
