Orlando Pirates’ coach Jose Riveiro was cautious after their 2-0 win against Jwaneng Galaxy in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.
The win, achieved at Gaborone National Stadium on Saturday, came courtesy of goals from Tshegofatso Mabasa and Deon Hotto.
However, Riveiro made it clear that the tie was far from secure.
“It’s a good result, but it’s not over, not at all!” Riveiro declared post-match. “There are still 90 minutes to play in Orlando.
“We’ll celebrate this victory for a few hours, but then our focus shifts to our Betway Premiership opener against Chippa United on Wednesday.
“After that, we’ll turn our attention back to Jwaneng.”
The second leg of the tie will take place at Orlando Stadium next Saturday, and Pirates will need to maintain their focus to ensure progression.
Riveiro also reflected on last season’s disappointment when Jwaneng Galaxy eliminated Pirates in the same stage.
“It was painful not advancing to the group stages last season,” Riveiro admitted. “Jwaneng was better than us then. We’ve since grown as a team, and this season, we are more prepared.
“After that elimination, we managed to win the MTN8 final against Sundowns, which was a significant rebound.”
Riveiro’s words underscore the importance of the upcoming second leg and the need for his team to stay sharp, despite their commanding lead from the first leg.
