Jose Riveiro credits assistant Mandla Ncikazi for Pirates’ MTN8 success

Assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi has confirmed that both Olisa Ndah and Monnapule Saleng have missed training in the lead-up to the MTN8 final against Stellenbosch FC.

Orlando Pirates made history as the first club to win three consecutive MTN8 Cup titles with a stellar performance at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Coach Jose Riveiro attributed much of this success to his assistant, Mandla Ncikazi, whose deep understanding of South African football culture has proven invaluable.

The match began dramatically, with Stellenbosch FC striking first in the 14th minute through a well-timed volley from Lehlohonolo Mojela. However, the Buccaneers responded just before half-time, with Monnapule Saleng levelling the score, setting the stage for a thrilling second half.

In the latter stages of the match, Pirates asserted their dominance, with substitutes Tshegofatso Mabasa and Relebohile Mofokeng both finding the net, sealing the victory and adding yet another trophy to their cabinet.

Post-match, Riveiro praised Ncikazi’s significant role in helping him acclimatise to the local game.

“Mandla’s role is crucial for an outsider like me. I know football is universal, but each league has its unique characteristics,” Riveiro said.

He highlighted Ncikazi’s extensive experience as a former player and coach in South Africa, saying, “He knows the landscape well, which helps me understand the players, the opponents, and the culture.”

Riveiro emphasised the importance of being surrounded by local expertise, noting, “Mandla has been respectful and cooperative, and together, we share the common goal of winning games.”

This collaboration has clearly paid off, with the Pirates making their mark on South African football history.
