Veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, a stalwart for Kaizer Chiefs, and the emerging talent Mfundo Vilakazi showcased their prowess in the Carling Cup All Stars XI.
The dynamic duo played pivotal roles in securing a 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch at Peter Mokaba Stadium, with Vilakazi netting the opening goal and Khune earning the prestigious Man of the Match award.
After the game, the 36-year-old Khune shared words of wisdom with the 18-year-old Vilakazi, who is eagerly awaiting his DStv Premiership debut. Khune emphasized the importance of hard work and patience, urging the young star not to be disheartened and to focus on his game.
“Mfundo has to work hard. He must not lose hope; his time will come,” Khune told media. “Just keep on working hard on the field, and when the time is right, the opportunity will come his way.”
Khune’s advice extended beyond Vilakazi, emphasizing the broader context of young players striving to make their mark in the professional arena. Drawing parallels with his own journey, Khune highlighted the significance of dedication, resilience, and the ability to seize opportunities.
“It goes to other youngsters, not only Mfundo. But the players that he is playing with, he was playing with Mduduzi Shabalala, and look what happened? He got promoted,” Khune remarked.
Vilakazi was part of an impressive contingent of DStv Diski Challenge starlets, including Vicky Mkhawana, Jabulani Mokone, and Kagiso Mnguni from Orlando Pirates, as well as Masibonge Ngidi and Sphamandla Zikhali of AmaZulu FC, voted into the match. Khune highlighted the exposure provided by the DDC, with televised games offering a platform for young talents to be scouted by first-team coaches.
“They are being watched week in and week out,” Khune emphasized. “They just have to take their careers seriously, follow their hearts, and be patient because when the other doors close, the other one opens.”
Reflecting on his own journey, Khune recalled the limited opportunities available during his youth. Nevertheless, he stressed the importance of seizing every chance, citing his occasional matches against the first team as crucial moments that paved the way for his impressive career.
