Innocent Maela hits 200 games milestone with Orlando Pirates

Innocent Maela achieved a milestone on Saturday, making his 200th appearance for Orlando Pirates in their 2-0 win over Jwaneng Galaxy in Gaborone.

The left-back, who joined the Pirates’ first team in 2017 after a stint with Thanda Royal Zulu, has been a steadfast figure for the Buccaneers ever since.

Maela’s journey with the club began in October 2017 with his debut against Golden Arrows. His consistent performances and leadership qualities earned him the captain’s armband in July 2022.

As he reached the 200-appearance mark, Maela was introduced in the latter stages of the CAF Champions League clash, cementing his place among the elite few who have achieved this feat.

Reflecting on his career, Maela stated, “When I joined the Academy, my first goal was to improve as a player. I never imagined I’d reach the first team, let alone make 200 appearances.

“It’s an honour and privilege to represent this club so many times. I dedicate this milestone to all the Academy players who didn’t get the chance to play for the first team. This is for them.”

He also reminisced about his career highlights, including scoring in the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs and being named captain.

“Becoming the Club’s captain was a huge milestone and an honour voted by my teammates. It reflects the contribution I’ve made to the club and their view of me as both a player and leader.

“Lifting trophies as a captain remains one of my fondest memories,” Maela added.
