Innocent Maela admits SuperSport will be a tough challenge ahead of the start of their title defence

Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela has acknowledged the tough task that is ahead of them of overcoming SuperSport United in their first step towards defending their MTN8 trophy.

The Soweto giants will lock horns with United on Saturday at Orlando Stadium in what will be their first official match for the 2024-25 season.

Maela was speaking during the official launch of the 2024 MTN8 tournament on Wednesday at Auckland Park. He said the team is determined to lift the trophy for the third consecutive time and that starts by winning their quarterfinal match, showcasing the positive start to their campaign.

“We are looking forward to starting the season on a positive note. We are well aware of the challenge that lies ahead of us this weekend. SuperSport United are a very tough side. Matches against them are never easy and we cannot, and will not underestimate them,” said Maela.

The last meeting between the Sea Robbers and Matsantsantsa ended in a 1-1 stalemate and it was buoyed by a 3-1 defeat for Pirates. Their last victory against the Pretoria side was on 18 March 2023, Thapelo Xoki’s 79th-minute penalty sealed the win for the Soweto side.

The Buccaneers are fresh off a successful pre-season tour in Spain which saw them partake in friendly matches with European giants including Sevilla whom they stunned 2-0 thanks to goals from Thalente Mbatha and a long-range shot by Kabelo Dlamini.

Jose Riveiro’s side also strengthened their squad with a number of formidable signings including Angolan sensation Delvi Miguel Vieira, affectionally known as Gilberto, Thuso Moleki from Orbit College, SuperSport United’s Selaelo Rasebotja, Ethal Khel from NC Professionals, Bayanda Zulu from Midlands Wanderers and Dimpho Madalane from Madubaduba FC.
