“I didn’t make it in football because I have a relative …” – Kermit Erasmus Sets the Record Straight

In a candid interview with Orlando Pirates [YouTube], Kermit Erasmus addressed misconceptions about his career and treatment at the club.

He emphasized his own hard work and dedication, not family connections, led to his success. Erasmus even took a significant pay cut to join Orlando Pirates during a difficult time for the team. He believes his winning mentality had a positive impact, but it wasn’t a solo effort.

“I didn’t make it in football because I have a relative who’s some sort of a legened in their past, and I’m riding off that name, to make it something in my career. All these things that I’ve done in my career come from the things I’ve done myself from believing in myself.

Erasmus expressed frustration with the lack of respect he felt he received. He pointed out how his contributions, both to the club and South African football in general, weren’t always acknowledged.

Mentioning Orlando Pirates legend Daine Klate, Erasmus highlighted the disconnect between his achievements and recognition. Erasmus feels that the club does not consider the fact that players have lives outside of football and need to plan for the future.

Despite his accomplishments, Erasmus feels his efforts haven’t been fully appreciated. He discussed situations where his injury status and future with the club were miscommunicated, creating unnecessary uncertainty, especially with his family depending on him.

Erasmus contrasts the situation in South Africa with that of Europe. He says that in Europe, players are taken care of after their careers are over. Erasmus concludes the video by saying that the only appreciation he gets for his career is the love from the fans. Their love and appreciation are what truly matter to him.
