HUGO BROOS WORRIED ABOUT LACK OF GOALKEEPERS IN SOUTH AFRICA

Bafana Bafana boss Hugo Broos says the lack of local goalkeepers in the South African top flight is detrimental to the national team.

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams is the first choice Bafana shotstopper, although he has been injured for the past few months.

This has led Broos to select Ricardo Goss (SuperSport United), Veli Mothwa (AmaZulu FC) and Sipho Chaine (Orlando Pirates) for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan next month.

Reflecting on the large amount of foreign keepers in the Betway, Broos explained: “I am a little bit surprised that there are a lot of foreign goalkeepers in the league.

“This is not good for African football.

“On the other hand we have good keepers. We have Ronwen, Veli. We have Sipho now, we have Ricardo and also [Bruce] Bvuma, for me he’s a good goalkeeper but I think he’ll not get his chance again at Chiefs this season [presumably because they’ve signed Rwanda No.1 Fiacre Ntwari].”

On who will take Williams place in their next game, Broos added: “I will make a decision in the next week and that will depend on several things, we will see.

“We have enough goalkeepers and they are not too old either but if you have a guy like Ronwen out for those two games, that’s a little problem not only because he’s a good goalkeeper but because he’s also a good captain.”
