HISTORY MADE: ‘We need to be stronger, learn & show grit from the first minute’ – Ronwen Williams rallies Bafana Bafana ahead of World Cup knockout rounds

Heading into the high-stakes encounter, the mandate for Hugo Broos’ men was crystal clear: win or go home. Facing a formidable Korean side, South Africa knew they had to deliver a flawless tactical performance and eliminate the defensive frailties that had plagued their earlier group-stage matches.

Speaking to SABC Sport in an emotional post-match interview, Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams couldn’t hide his pride in the squad’s defensive resilience as he recorded his first shut out in the tournament.

“To keep a clean sheet against such quality opposition, to perform the way we did, defend the way we did! The mentality and character in these boys… I’m scared for the future of this country. These boys are twenty, nineteen, twenty-one years old playing at this level. The experience that they are gaining will only help us as a country.”

Ahead of last night’s triumph, Bafana Bafana had developed a dangerous habit of starting halves on the back foot. In their opening fixtures against Mexico and Czechia, lapse concentration saw them concede costly goals within the first ten minutes of play.

Williams emphasized a shift in psychological focus as they approached the highly anticipated final group game.

“Let’s try and be super focused up until that first water break, which is around the twenty-fourth, twenty-fifth [minute],” Williams revealed, explaining the team’s on-field mentality.

“We could have gone one down in the first two or three minutes in a set play, so we need to be stronger and learn and show the grit from the first minute—I mean from the first second!”

Next up, South Africa now turns its attention to the business end of the tournament. Bafana Bafana are set to face tournament co-hosts Canada in a highly anticipated Round of 32 blockbuster. The knockout clash will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday at 21h00 CAT.
