GladAfrica Championship: Gameweek 5 Preview

GladAfrica Championship: Gameweek 5 Preview

This has been an interesting start to the GladAfrica Championship season with the rookies, JDR Stars, remaining unbeaten and topping the standings after four games. Embattled Royal Eagles are rooted to the foot of the table and they are brewing rivalry with Real Kings as the Mpisane family will be divided when these sides meet this weekend. Let’s try and predict the results.

Saturday 21 September

University of Pretoria 14/10

Draw 2/1

Uthongathi 18/10

(15:00)

AmaTuks are currently placed second with two wins and two draws. They were too strong for Cape Umoya United last week as they edged them 1-0 in a cagey affair. Uthongathi are the only side with back to back victories in the league, having won both their opening two matches so far this season. Last week they clobbered newly-promoted Steenberg. The Cane Cutters have the momentum and I expect them to win in Pretoria.

Royal Eagles 17/10

Draw 2/1

Real Kings 15/10

(15:00)

This encounter came at interesting time as some members of the Mpisane family which owns Royal Eagles have apparently bought Real Kings. This has resulted into some administration chaos as Real Kings has taken over Royal Eagles’ social media pages and renamed them, but they forgot to change the logos. So, this will basically be a family derby with Sbu Mpisane coming up against his wife and son and the divorce storyline will fuel the rivalry between these two teams. Sbu’s Eagles are rooted to the foot of the table while Kings recorded their first win of the season last week. My money is on Real Kings.

Steenberg United 14/10

Draw 2/1

Swallows 18/10

(15:00)

Steenberg suffered a 5-1 baptism of fire from Uthongathi the last time out and that means they have lost two of their three games since gaining promotion. This will be an interesting matchup against another new team in the division as Swallows earned a spot in the second tier through buying Maccabi’s status. The Birds won their first game of the season beating Royal Eagles 3-2 and should do enough to get a draw.

TS Sporting  2/1

Draw 2/1

Mbombela United 13/10

(15:00)

This is a Mpumalanga derby between two embattled clubs with TS Sporting deep in the relegation zone as they are second from bottom of the log without a single victory so far this season. Mbombela were shocked by red, hot rookies JDR who thrashed them 3-1 last week. This has draw written all over it.

Sunday 22 September

JDR Stars 11/10

Draw 21/10

Cape Umoya United 23/10

(15:00)

JDR are the Leicester City of the GladAfrica Championship as they top the standings after four games. They thrashed Mbombela 3-1 last week to return to the summit of the standings and if they continue like this, they can really contend for promotion as they are unbeaten in their first four games with two draws and two wins. Cape Umoya United lost 1-0 to promotion-chasing University of Pretoria in a tightly-contested encounter. Back the rookies to triumph.

Richards Bay 1/1

Draw 21/10

Free State Stars 5/2

(15:00)

Richards Bay have played three games so far this season and are still unbeaten with two draws and one win. On the other hand, Free State Stars, as expected, are still winless with a new group of players getting to know each other and it seems like it’s taking too long for the players to gel. It won’t be easy for them to hold their own against strong opponents away from home. My money is on Richards Bay.

TS Galaxy 5/2

Draw 2/1

Ajax Cape Town 11/10

(15:00)

Sanele Barns’ early strike handed TS Galaxy a 1-0 victory over CNaPS Sport in the CAF Confederations. Having played only two league games so far this season, the Rockets have only two points as they drew both. Ajax earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over TTM in Cape Town last week which propelled them to fourth place on the table. The next target will be to break into the top three and start competing for top flight promotion. This is tricky one between two good sides and I’ll say it ends in a draw.

TREBLE @ 11/1

Uthongathi Win 18/10

JDR Stars Win 11/10

Richards Bay Win 1/1
