Bidvest Wits head coach Gavin Hunt admits his charges will need to be at their best for the rest of the season if they intend to challenge for the title.
The Clever Boys will have two big opportunities to close the gap to Absa Premiership leaders Kaizer Chiefs in the coming weeks as they will face each other home and away.
Mamelodi Sundowns boss Pitso Mosimane commented on the fact that Wits will play Chiefs twice, and requested Hunt’s men to do the Brazilians a favour by beating Amakhosi.
“Pitso has been in the game long enough. He knows more than I do. It was said tongue in cheek didn’t he? So I take it as a joke. We are trying to fight our battles. It’s a joke and I like it,” Hunt said, as quoted by Sowetan Live.
“We have 17 games and 33 points, so we are under two points a game. Chiefs look like they will make 65 points easily so we will need to go like hell.”
Wits brought an end to a two-game losing run in the league on Saturday as they beat Baroka FC 1-0 away from home.
“Any win is a big win in the PSL, especially after losing last Wednesday. It was important for us to bounce back,” added Hunt.
The Wits boss also pointed out that he does not put pressure on his players by talking about trophies. He instead focuses his teams on taking it one game at a time.
“I never talk about the log or winning trophies with the players or anything like that. I believe that if you win the next game then you win the league. That’s the mentality we have,” Hunt said.
“So we just work on the next game which is Highlands on Wednesday.”
Wits will take on Chiefs on the 18th of March, at FNB Stadium, and at home on 24 April.
