Fortune Makaringe says he’s living his dream at Orlando Pirates

Fortune Makaringe is grateful to Orlando Pirates for being able to display his top talents.

The 30-year-old midfielder joined the Buccaneers from Maritzburg United in 2019 and has gone on to play 144 times, scoring nine goals and providing eight assists.

He hasn’t always been an integral part of the team, and has previously received criticism for not improving from his time at the Team of Choice.

But he has been in good form this season under head coach Jose Riveiro, playing 11 games in all competitions so far.

Reflecting on his time with Pirates, Makaringe, who has recently been seeing game-time at right back, said in the Sowetan: “For one to think that [I have regressed] it means they haven’t been watching Orlando Pirates with a critical eye. The Fortune who plays for Orlando Pirates has been doing well season in, season out.

“I’ve grown a lot in terms of my game. I’ve had the best times of my football career here at Pirates more than at Maritzburg. I am living my dream here.”

On his new position, the player added: “A very interesting role indeed. Well, for me it’s just playing football and playing for the team that’s important.

“I’ll be honest with you when my employer employed me, they didn’t tell me I was coming to play a certain position. They employed an employee who was going to be ready to work in the team, so for me playing in that right-back position it’s not unfamiliar.

“We’ve prepared for a long time ago and I’ve always been prepared to play anywhere so it was just me coming in and playing.”

Pirates next take on Golden Arrows in at the Mpumalanga Stadium on Sunday.
