With both sides on fine form, level on points and Germany leading the race on goal difference, the fixture will decide who remains the group leaders after matchday two. On a mission to change the narrative after their 2022 World Cup early exist, the four-time champions opened the tournament with an emphatic 7-1 victory over minnows Curacao.

Meanwhile, Côte d’Ivoire will also aim to complete the task at hand which is to stop the fast-moving train of the Germany side and maintaining their momentum. Their 1-0 win over Ecuador set the tone for them in the North American-based tournament.

Key Storyline
Germany

In the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the side fell short in the group stages, winning only one of their three group stage fixtures. A loss against Japan and a draw against Spain costed them a spot in the knockout stages.

With this tournament posing as an opportunity to redeem themselves, coach Julian Nagelsman’s outfit will look to make it useful. A win against the Elephants will place them in a stronger position to secure a spot in the round of 32.

Led by captain Joshua Kimmich the squad is on a mission to write their names in the rich history of Germany.

Côte d’Ivoire

The 2023 AFCON winners come to the tournament having disappointingly missed out in the last two World Cup editions in Russia and Qatar. The Elephants, since their debut World Cup in 2006, they have never made it out in the group stages; Therefore, a victory against Nagelsman’s side might take them a step closer to qualifying for the knockout round for the first time in history.

They came to the world’s showpiece full of confidence inspired by their victory against one of the tournament’s favourites, France, during a preparation friendly. The Elephants, driven forward by the skilful, pacey and goal-orientated wingers such as Yan Diomande, Amad Diallo, and Nickolas Pepe; Germany should expect a less conservative team.

Players to watch
Germany: Jamal Musiala

The Bayern Munich attacking midfielder, also regarded as one of the best offensive young players in the world, poses a huge danger for his ponents with his creativity, ball carrying ability, and composure inside the box.

Despite being only 23 years old, Musiala is no new name in the big stage after starting all German’s World Cup 2022 group stage games. Coming to face the African side, the former England youth team player played a role in their 7-1 thumping of Curacao by scoring a goal in the second half.

With support from up-front players like Leroy Sane, Floren Wirtz, and Kai Havertz; Ivory Coast can not afford to give him freedom.

Côte d’Ivoire: Yan Diomande

Currently playing his trade for Leipzig FC in the German’s Bundesliga, Diomande is very much familiar with German style of play. The 19-year-old winger, following his Player of the Match award in their last game, he will be oozing with confidence and ready to prove his qualities against the 2014 World Cup champions.

If coach Emerse Fae’s side tactically plan to play a more conservative game and catch Germany on counter attacks, Diomande’s pace and skill in the wing will play a crucial role.

Form Guide
Germany

Germany 7-1 Curacao

USA 1-2 Germany

Germany 4-0 Finland

Germany 2-1 Ghana

Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador

France 1-2 Ivory Coast

Scotland 0-1 Ivory Coast

South Korea 0-4 Ivory Coast

With both Germany scoring 15 goals while conceding only 3 in 4 games speaks volumes about the side’s attack and stability at the back. Despite their fine form building up to the tournament, expect Ivory Coast to play a more conservative game.

Team News

Germany will expect to have their full squads as none of their players is injured or banned. Key players such as Kai Harvetz, Florian Wirtz and Lorey Sane are expected to start the match.

Meanwhile, Ivory Coast will be without one of their key forwards, Elye Wahi. The striker 23-year-old striker was denied entry to Canada. The denied entry is due to ongoing investigations over match fixing alleged match fixing scandal with his club side, Nice.

Betting Tips

A high scoring fixture can be expected from the two on form side.

However, with their experience in the big tournament and having won it four time, Germany remains the favourites to win the fixture. A double chance of Germany or Draw may be the safest bet. Over 2.5 goals would also be a very logical bet as the fixture promise to be raining goals.

Prediction

Expect a very intense attack from Germany in the first few minutes of the game, while Ivory Coast might seat back and look to catch them on counterattack. The midfield battle will be one crucial aspect of the match. With the experience of Fofana and former Barcelona midfielder Kessie, German midfield will need extra fighting spirit to win it.

With both side’s attacking prowess both defences will not rest at any time of the match.

Verdict: Germany 3-2 Ivory Coast
