EFL Playoff Final: Leeds v Southampton

Leeds vs Southampton | Sunday 26 May | Wembley Stadium | 16:00

It is the richest game in English football, it’s this Sunday at Wembley and it sees Leeds take on Southampton for a place in the Premier League. These two sides will be looking for an immediate return to the top flight, but I think the game could be rather tricky…

To Win (90 mins)

Leeds 12/10
Draw 39/20
Southampton 19/10

Leeds

Leeds will surely come into this game with all the confidence, they battered Norwich 4-0 at home to secure a spot in the final (this after a rather cagey first leg), but they will be weary of their opponents. Southampton were the victors when these two sides faced off earlier this month on the last day of the campaign.

Furthermore, Leeds has a horrible record in the playoff, in their previous five attempts they have failed every time to gain promotion!

Leeds would have been hopeful for automatic promotion after their performances this season, but a touch of inconsistency has cost them dearly and now need to overcome a stern test in a very hostile environment. The all whites finished third on the log, a place ahead of the Saints but they will know they can take nothing for granted here.

Southampton

Southampton ended up finishing their campaign in fourth place. They too had to regroup and respond to a really poor first showing against West Brom. Southampton were able to complete the League double on Leeds this year, most notably coming away 2-1 winners at Elland Road.

I thought the Saints were really professional and clinical last time out against the Baggies. They were dominant in every area and never really looked to be in any trouble. They have been prolific in front of goal and having a secure defensive base, they are able to launch from anywhere on the football field and put their opponents under pressure.

Against Leeds this year, the Saints have scored five goals and conceded just twice! We could take that one further and say that in their last six showings, the Saints have only lost to Leeds once…

I don’t think they will have it all their own way, but I think Southampton can make a really positive claim for victory here.

Prediction: Southampton (19/10)

I think Southampton win, I really do. I know it might not be a popular opinion either, but given their record against Leeds, their defensive stability this season, the threats they hold upfront, and the awkward history Leeds has in the playoffs – back the Saints.
