Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly joined the race to sign Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu.
Kaizer Chiefs are other club hoping to lure Zungu from French Ligue 2 outfit Amiens, where the 29-year-old has failed to make much of an impression.
Chiefs know they now face stiff competition for Zungu as Sundowns are usually able to sign whoever they like due to their far superior budget. It was with Sundowns that Zungu initially burst onto the scene between 2013 and 2016 and the Brazilians are now reported to have tabled a bid to secure his return.
“SABC Sport can reveal that Mamelodi Sundowns have officially launched an audacious bid in an attempt to lure midfielder Bongani Zungu back to Chloorkop,” the national outlet reported.
According to information received by SABC Sport, the current DStv Premiership title holders have tabled an offer for the player and hope to get the deal over the line, although Zungu will not be in a hurry to make a decision.
“The midfielder has previously been linked with clubs in Spain, Turkey, and the Gulf region, even before his Amiens exit, so it is likely those conversations will pick up again, meaning that Sundowns face stiff competition in getting their target,” the report added.
Zungu was a key member of the Bafana squad that competed at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt but has since fallen out of favour at national team level under Hugo Broos.
