Bafana Bafana legend Doctor Khumalo explains why Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa was excluded from the current national team by coach Hugo Broos.
Speaking on the DNA Podcast, Khumalo expressed his admiration for Mabasa’s recent form but acknowledged why he may not fit into Broos’ tactical plans.
Mabasa, 27, has enjoyed a resurgence in his career since returning to Orlando Pirates from Moroka Swallows in January. The striker won the Golden Boot last season and has continued his strong performance into the 2024/25 campaign, featuring in five matches and scoring once.
Khumalo, who has always been a fan of Mabasa’s playing style, admitted he was disappointed not to see him in the national squad.
“He’s on top of his game and I would’ve loved to see him being part of the national team,” Khumalo said. He noted that despite Mabasa’s impressive club performances, his style of play might not align with Broos’ tactical approach.
Khumalo pointed out that Broos’ selections tend to favour versatile forwards who can operate across the attack rather than a traditional target man.
“When you look at the strikers he rotates, it’s surprising that players like Khanyisa Mayo and Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who are performing well, are also not included,” Khumalo added.
He suggested that Broos’ tactical system requires mobile forwards who can adapt to various positions, contrasting with Mabasa’s more traditional, central role.
“Mabasa is a link player who thrives when the team plays through him, but Broos prefers players who are more flexible in their positioning,” Khumalo explained.
Bafana will next face South Sudan on Tuesday in their second 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, and it remains to be seen how Broos’ selections will impact their campaign.
