Daniel Akpeyi encourages Nigerians to move to Betway Premiership

Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi wants to see more Nigerians compete in the Betway Premiership.

The 38-year-old Super Eagles shotstopper moved to South Africa from Warri Wolves in 2015.

He excelled during his four years at Chippa United before earning a move to Kaizer Chiefs and playing 69 games over three seasons.

Akpeyi joined Gallants this season after his exit from Moroka Swallows, and only has good things to say about the South African top-flight.

Akpeyi feels that there are more opportunties for fellows Nigerians to succeed by moving away from the Nigerian Professional Football League.

He told FARPost: “To be quite honest with you, Nigerians have to consider this league because without disrespect, with all humility, there’s no way you can compare the Nigerian league and the South African league.

“We have a lot of good players in Nigeria, a lot of good talent in Nigeria but they need this kind of exposure for their talent to be seen around the world.

“It’s not that they cannot be seen in the Nigerian league as well. But the PSL league, like I said initially, is one of the top six leagues in Africa.

“It’s one of the best in the world as well, it’s recognised. With all the talent that we have in Nigeria, if you can find the way in the PSL league, trust me it’s easy to showcase yourself in the world.”

Besides Akpeyi, other Nigerians who ply their trade in the PSL include Etiosa Ighodaro [AmaZulu FC], Olisa Ndah [Orlando Pirates], Stanley Nwabali [Chippa United], Ibraheem Jabaar and Enyinnaya Kazie Godswill [both Stellenbosch FC].
