PSL legend Collins Mbesuma has shared his views on Kaizer Chiefs striker Ranga Chivaviro, highlighting the importance of consistent goal-scoring.
Chivaviro, whose contract with the Amakhosi is set to expire at the end of the current season, has struggled to replicate his prolific form from his time at Marumo Gallants.
During the 2022/23 campaign, he netted an impressive 17 goals in 30 appearances. However, since joining Chiefs last season, the 31-year-old has managed only three goals in nine appearances across all competitions this year.
As the only recognized striker in the Chiefs squad, Chivaviro shoulders significant responsibility. His teammates, Wandile Duba and Ashley Du Preez, have been deployed in alternative attacking roles, leaving the former Gallants marksman as the focal point in the attack.
Mbesuma, who holds the record for the most goals scored in a PSL season (25 goals during the 2004/05 campaign with Chiefs), emphasized that Chivaviro’s future at the club depends on his ability to deliver goals consistently.
“Well, that [contract extension] will go down to the coaches and the club’s management; at least he has a clause for an extension,” Mbesuma told FARPost.
Mbesuma also pointed out that Chiefs’ head coach Nasreddine Nabi is reportedly seeking a new striker, signalling concerns about Chivaviro’s current contribution.
“At the end of the day, it’s up to him [Chivaviro] and what he brings to the club. He has to score goals and help the club achieve its objectives,” Mbesuma added.
The veteran striker underlined the importance of performance as the deciding factor for Chivaviro’s future at The Glamour Boys.
“To be honest, what can save him and earn him that extension is only performing well. By that, it’s scoring goals because he’s a striker, and that’s his only job on the field—to score,” Mbesuma concluded.
With the season progressing, Chivaviro will need to rediscover his form and make a convincing case for his stay at Chiefs, particularly as the club looks to bolster its attacking options.
