Coach Clinton Larsen has cautioned teams against underestimating his resilient Magesi FC as they gear up to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout final.
The 2023/24 Motsepe Foundation Champions, newcomers to the Betway Premiership, have exceeded expectations, particularly in cup competitions.
Magesi’s journey to the final have showcased their grit and determination.
They stunned favourites Orlando Pirates, edged Richards Bay 1-0 in the semi-finals, and held both Cape Town City FC and Kaizer Chiefs to league draws. Despite their underdog status, Larsen’s side are rewriting the narrative about newly promoted teams.
Reflecting on the shift in perception, Larsen said: “At the Betway Premiership launch, Thomas (Mlambo) joked that every team saw Magesi as an easy three points. We’re proving that’s not the case.
“People might compare us to Cape Town Spurs’ struggles last season, but we’re showing we’re different.”
Larsen credited the team’s success to their organisation and resilience, emphasising their progress: “My job is to get this team as organised as possible and make us tough to beat. I think we’re on the right track.”
Currently 11th in the league after six matches, Magesi have suffered only one defeat, signalling their competitive edge.
The cup final against Sundowns, set for Saturday, 23 November, at Bloemfontein’s Toyota Stadium, offers a chance for Larsen’s side to cap off their impressive cup run with silverware.
Magesi’s story is a testament to hard work and belief, proving they are no longer a team to be taken lightly.
