Champions League is the goal, says Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler says the club are in line to achieve their objectives this season.

The Citizen’s are currently in second place on the DStv Premiership standings with 29 points from 16 games; level with SuperSport United in third place and just six adrift of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Tinkler’s side have CAF Champions League football in their sights, having last qualified for the continental competition when securing second place in the 2021/22 campaign.

Their previous campaign was largely unsuccessful though as they lost out to Petro de Luanda 4-0 on aggregate in the second round.

They went on to drop into the CAF Confederation Cup where they went down 1-0 on aggregate to eventual winner USM Alger.

As his side take’s a break for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, with their next game against Swallows on 13 February, Tinker explained the ambitions of his high-flying team.

He said in the Citizen: “We see ourselves as a club that should be competing in the top four at least that should be how we see ourselves as a club and what my chairman expects from me.

“To do that, a lot of hard work has to be put in we have the experience a couple of seasons ago where we went into the Champions League unfortunately, we didn’t go as far as we would have liked but that’s a target and an objective for us.

“Chairman and I we’ve had that conversation, that we would like to see ourselves there again and then obviously all the rumours running around right now with the so-called Super League, you would like to see yourself should those types of things happen you become part and parcel.”
