Cassius Mailula has shed light on what motivated him to move from Toronto FC to Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club citing that a talk with his former mentor Rulani Mokwena made him realise that rejoining forces with him would put his career back on track.
Mailula was announced as the new Wydad signing on 21 August on a season-long loan with an option to buy following an underwhelming stint in the MLS where he made eight appearances, netted two goals and provided one assist for Toronto FC.
Speaking through his representative P Management Sports, the 23-year-old revealed that his reunion with his former coach will revive his career and assist him to realise his dream of being on the field with the world’s best players.
“I chose Wydad AC for several compelling reasons. First, I will be under the guidance of Coach Rhulani, who knows me well and has always believed in my abilities.
He played a pivotal role in my upcoming at Mamelodi Sundowns. Wydad is a prestigious club, and when Coach Rhulani shared his ambitions and his vision to make history with the team, I knew it was the right choice.
Additionally, the opportunity to compete in the Club World Cup next year is a significant driver to the decision, as it aligns with my dream to play against the best players in the world.” Mailula concluded.
The Red Castle is set to kickstart their 2024-25 season with a visit to MAS de Fes on 30 August in a bid to redeem themselves following a disastrous 2023-24 campaign which saw them finishing in the sixth position on the Botola Pro League standings.
