Carlos Queiroz has said he would be the first to resign as Ghana manager if his departure could provide a solution after a disastrous start to the Black Stars’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The Portuguese coach was reappointed earlier this month after guiding Ghana to the last 32 at the 2026 World Cup. His second spell has begun badly, however, with Ghana bottom of Group C and without a point after two matches.
Ghana opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Côte d’Ivoire before suffering an even more damaging setback against Gambia in Accra.
The Black Stars appeared to be in control after Ernest Nuamah converted a 27th-minute penalty and Felix Afena-Gyan doubled their advantage soon afterwards. Gambia responded with four goals, completing a remarkable comeback and leaving Ghana facing an uphill battle to reach next year’s tournament.
Queiroz accepted responsibility for the result but said his future should be determined by the Ghana Football Association.

“After a result like this, it is easy to say the coach should resign,” Queiroz said, according to GhanaSoccernet. “But that is the decision for the GFA to analyse and decide to stick with me or not.
“If my resignation will be the solution for Ghana football, I’d be the first one to resign. But this is a decision I’ll leave for the federation.”
Ghana must now recover quickly, with their qualification campaign already threatening to become a major test of Queiroz’s second tenure.
