The Carling Knockout offers top flight clubs a second shot at glory after Orlando Pirates’ MTN8 triumph earlier this month and with the Mighty Buccaneers dispatched in the first round, it’s all to play for!
All eyes were on the tournament’s most successful club, Kaizer Chiefs, with 13 trophies to their name. The Glamour Boys ran riot at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, putting four past SuperSport without reply.
With the dust yet to settle, SBN look’s at Sunday’s clashes!
TS Galaxy
Last year’s finalists TS Galaxy, have experienced a tough start to the new season, losing four matches in a row. The Rockets are adapting to playing without some of their key players. Goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari has joined Chiefs, Bradley Mojela is now with Stellenbosch, defender Pogiso Sanoka was signed by SuperSport United, and Samir Nurkovic is currently a free agent.
Chippa United
Kwanele Kopo seems to have turned things around for Chippa after a disappointing 2023-24 season, where they finished in 12th place in the league standings. The team, currently in fourth place, has won two matches, drawn one, and lost one in their first four games. They are aiming for a second consecutive win against the Mpumalanga side, having previously defeated them 2-1 in a league match last month.
Richards Bay
The Natal Rich Boyz have not won any of their last three matches, putting pressure on Brandon Truter to get back to winning ways. He will be up against a team that is familiar with his tactics, as Kaitano Tembo is one of the coaches at Sekhukhune. Tembo left Richards Bay in December last year, and the team has not undergone many changes since his departure.
Sekhukhune United
Babina Noko is one of the four teams that have not been defeated in the league this season. In their last match, they defeated Richards Bay 3-1 and will be looking to replicate that performance in this encounter. It will be interesting to see if newly-signed players Sipho Mbule and Lesedi Kapinga will be included in this match.
Players to Watch
TS Galaxy
With one goal from one league start, Dženan Zajmović has landed in the country. The Bosnian forward has added firepower to the Rockets, something which Ramovic will need by the bucketloads this season.
Chippa
Andile Jali has been commended for his leadership qualities in recent weeks. The former Pirates man found the back of the net against them earlier this season, showing that he still has an eye for goal.
Richards Bay
Justice Figuareido could just be what Brandon Truter needs in this one. The Eswatini international has shown his capabilities with the Natal Rich Boyz and came close to handing them the 3 points in the KZN derby against Royal AM when he struck the woodwork.
Sekhukhune United
Whilst he is yet to open his account in the Betway Premiership, Keletso Makgalwa is banging on the door. The wideman has been a constant threat for Babina Noko and I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds the back of the net here.
