Carling All-StarS: “The reality is that Mfundo was there because people voted for him.” – Riveiro reflects on Chiefs youngster selection

"The reality is that Mfundo was there because people voted for him." - Riveiro reflects on Chiefs youngster selection

Carling All-Stars coach Jose Riveiro has downplayed his role in the emergence of Kaizer Chiefs’ young star, Mfundo Vilakazi.

The Kaizer Chiefs academy graduate impressed in the previous Carling Black Label Cup in January, scoring in the All-Stars’ 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Riveiro, who coached the All-Stars in that match, will once again lead the team when they face Carling Knockout Cup champions Magesi FC at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, December 21, at 15h30.

Riveiro emphasized that Vilakazi’s appearance in the previous tournament was due to fan votes, not his own selection. During the official press conference, the Spaniard said, “Well, I think we have to contextualise that situation. Mfundo was there first because the people were voting for him to be there. It wasn’t a coach selection.

“It could have been nice for me to say that I was there when it all started. But, the reality is that Mfundo was there because people voted for him.

“He was on the field because the people wanted him to be there and I think the boy answered in a really good manner on the day.”
